KNUST: 6 students remanded over alleged rape case

Six students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been remanded into police custody for allegedly raping a first-year student.

The six were remanded after appearing before the Asokore Mampong District Court today Wednesday, August 3 2022.

They are Patrick Fosu, Edwin Nii Noi Quaynor, John Wilson, Kingsley Asiedu Andoh, Thompson Nii, and Assafua Eric.

Speaking to pressmen after the hearing, the lawyer for the accused Richard Adu Darko reiterated that students are innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

He mentioned that he will go to the high court and seek bail for the six students to allow them write the end-of-semester exams.

“Looking at the fact which has been presented to us, honestly, we don’t see rape but that’s what they have been accused of and once someone is accused, the law says the person is innocent until proven guilty or the person pleads otherwise.

“So, now until they plead that they are guilty or a court of competent jurisdiction finds them guilty, they are innocent. At this material moment this is a court of first instance and they have been brought here for purposes of remanding them into lawful custody.”

The case has been adjourned to Wednesday, August 17 2022.

This brings the number of rape cases in KNUST to 2 in the spate of 1 week.

A police officer and a final year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) were also remanded for allegedly gang-raping a female student at Bomso.

The two, reportedly lured the victim into an off-campus hostel at Bomso and allegedly pounced on her, raped her in turns and video-recorded the whole process.

The two were remanded after being charged with two counts; conspiracy to commit rape and rape.
