The Police have fired tear gas at members of Arise Ghana who hit through the streets of Accra on Tuesday June 28, 2022, to protest against economic challenges.

It is unclear what sparked the chaos at the scene, but some protestors pelted stones at the police and their vehicles.

Although it is unknown what may have caused the incident, it is being reported that there is tension on the grounds.

In a Twitter post, the Police revealed that some protestors pelted stones against some officers. It is unknown the reason behind the purported action by the protestors.

“What a shame, we were there to protect you and ensure your safety, but you threw stones at us, injured and hurt us. This behaviour is unacceptable and must be condemned,” the Police wrote.

Earlier, there was some form of contention between the police and protestors over the approved route.

The police had insisted on the group moving through Farisco through TUC to the Independence Square, however, the demonstrators sought to march towards the Ako Adjei Interchange en route to the Jubilee House.

Currently, the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange road has been closed, with no movement from either vehicle or persons.

Ghananest.com can confirm that there is an uneasy calm at the protest grounds as the demonstrators seem to be facing off with the Police officers.

In addition to the tear gas, police also responded to the protestors with their water cannons.

Meanwhile, two persons have been picked up by the Police following the incident.
