Prestea Sankofa Gold Ltd begins full operations after 2 years of shutdown
The Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited has begun full operations after 2 years of shutdown.
The mining company was established in 1994 to extract gold, mainly from historic mining tailings.
The mining company, which is owned by the state-run Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) shutdown all of its operations in 2016.
After several years of shutdown, the company has begun full operations over the past few months.
The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku-Duker, on Thursday, April 6, 2023, visited the company to familiarized himself with the operations of the community since it began operations again.
The visit was to also enable the Minister to acquaint himself with the challenges of the company and how best the government can address them to sustain the company.
Mr. Mireku-Duker, after touring the company’s site, commended the management for the administrative measures they outlined to sustain the operations of the company.
He said, the company was shutdown since 2015, even the workers were not paid and now under the new management the workers are now happy because they are paid.
The Managing Director of Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, in an interview expressed appreciation to Mr. Mireku-Duker for the visit and said, this is the first is the first time a government officials have visited the company for the past 17 years.
“The last visit was in 2006 and ever since no official from the government has come here, not even the sector Minister nor his deputy.”
He complained about other gold tailings companies that have been established around Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited.
He said those tailing companies have become a challenge to them because they buy the tailing which were supposed to be sold to them.
Mr. Acquah appealed to the government to direct any other tailing company to other regions, especially Eastern region so that Sankofa Gold Limited can have enough tailings for their operations.
